Our story
We’re friends and colleagues who’ve worked together across different spaces and one day, we realised we wanted to do more for young people who are underrepresented and from minoritised communities. We’ve seen the rise in negative rhetoric towards people of colour and especially Muslim communities recently. We refuse to stay silent and we’re not waiting for someone else to fix it. We are the systems change.
We know what drives young people because we are young people. Rooted Youth is where lived experience meets real expertise – creating fun, engaging spaces where people connect, embrace their culture, collaborate for change and find their sense of belonging in community.
We’re small, but we’re mighty. With our early funding support from the British Muslim Trust, we’ve already engaged over 580+ young people and we’re just getting started. We are proof of what’s possible when grassroots passion meets real investment. Who can volunteer with Rooted Youth?
We welcome anyone who shares our passion for building safe, inclusive spaces for young people – whether you’re a young adult yourself, a youth worker, or simply someone who cares about your community. No specific qualifications are required, just enthusiasm and respect for the people we work with.
What kind of volunteering opportunities are available?
Volunteers support a range of activities, from helping facilitate discussion spaces and creative sessions, to supporting events, contributing to publications and content, and helping behind the scenes with outreach and admin. We’ll match you to something that fits your skills and interests.
How much time do I need to commit?
We know everyone’s circumstances are different, so we keep things flexible. Whether you can offer a few hours a month or want to get involved more regularly, there’s a role to suit your availability.
Do I need any experience, training, or checks?
No prior experience is necessary — we provide induction and training for all volunteers. As we work directly with young people, all volunteers are required to complete an Enhanced DBS check before starting, to keep our community safe.
